Just to give you an idea about how important Opening Day was when I was a kid, my high school operated for only a half day so that people could get to the game.

Next to my wedding date, wife’s birthday and son’s birthday, Opening Day is the fourth most important day on the calendar.
My team, the St. Louis Cardinals, open the season today at 2pm in Philadelphia.
At about 1:45, I will probably come down with a stomach virus of some sort.

No, but when I was stationed in Germany, the work day didn’t start until noon on Monday on the day after the Super Bowl. (The game would start around 3:00 am.) Sometimes organizations like my high school and the Army recognize when it’s just better to make some concessions to reality.
