Former SecDef Casper Weinberger died today at the age of 88. I was just a cadet at West Point while he presided over the Department of Defense, and I never met the man, but his influence was felt throughout the military. For those who wore the uniform, there was a palpable sense of rebirth in the mid-80s, and it was exciting to be part of it, if only in a small way.
Just a few years later, the military he built to defeat the Soviet Union (which, btw, did just that–albeit not directly), defeated Iraq, which then possessed the world’s third-largest army. Today, many of those weapons Cap Weinberger procured, and many of the young leaders who, too, were “built” during that time, now lead the world’s greatest military into a new era.
Cap, thanks for a job well done.
