how to protest vs. how not to protest
I disagree with PETA’s position on Kentucky Fried Chicken. However, I greatly prefer their KFC protests to KFC protests organized by radical islamo-fascists.

What about PETA’s KFC position do you disagree with?

That meat isn’t edible.

Yeah, I’ll give you that.

I disagree with the fact that PETA is supposedly this progressive organization and every commercialized protest I see involves some form of objectifying women. Is this some mass last-ditch effort to convince red-blooded heterosexual males to drop the drumstick? It ain’t working.

Bob–The reason PETA has been picketing KFC is their unusually cruel treatment of the chickens. While PETA is against all meat eating, they are certainly not going after all fast food restaurants. There is footage of live chickens being thrown around and conditions so cramped that chickens can’t turn around. It’s the condition the chickens are being tortured with while alive, not the fact they are going to be killed that is PETA’s “bone to pick.”
TV–You make a great point. However, it is somewhat effective. Pam Anderson, the Go Gos, The Pretenders, and to get your attention, Jaquin Phoneix have all posed nude for PETA regarding their anti fur ad. In fact, I think Jack Gyllanhall did one for them too. Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails does the voiceover for their latest documentary on dog and cat fur from China. They skin them alive to boot.
So celebs and nudity or whatever it takes to bring attention to animal cruelty outweighs the political correctness in my book.
Ya think maybe I’m a memeber? Oh oh– I can hear Homeland Security coming for me again!

PETA Press Release:
“PETA wants to stimulate contemplation of how the victimization of Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, and others characterized as “life unworthy of life” during the Holocaust parallels the way that modern society abuses and justifies the slaughter of animals.”

Sharon, “PETA’s bone to pick.” That’s clever.

Bob–
I knew you’d catch that…I know your sense of humor is as twisted as mine. :)

What bothers me about PETA isn’t the naked women, (even I think some of them are pretty–in a purely artistic way) or the fact that they think meat is inedible (more for me).
It bothers me that despite all their rhetoric they actually euthanise adoptable animals.

They had a few scantily clad protestors at a KFC in Knoxville on Valentine’s Day. Two in skimpy outfits, the rest-heinous and big…

Katherine,
What you point to is a horrible incident. I was mortified when the news first broke about that. I don’t agree with everything PETA does, but they are the best group out there educating people about animal cruelty.
People wearing fur has declined significantly because of their work, and what they are doing now to stop dogs and cats being skinned alive–well, if that practice is stopped, it will be because of PETA. Watch the video at their website. Trent Reznor does the voiceover. Be ready to puke. I don’t know too many people (thankfully) who would approve of China skinning dogs and cats alive and selling the fur in Europe.
For me, PETA is taking the good with the bad. I back away from the things I don’t agree with, and get involved with the things they do that I do agree with. Kinda like politics, eh?

Animal protection is like any other cause that gets legs, attracts big money, and becomes a business: some corruption generally follows. I think the PETA of today is a very different org from the PETA I knew many years ago, but they have enlightened us about the treatment of animals in our society, and I continue to support the real message.

At the time of PETA’s last “crippled chicken” protest at KFC a couple of years ago, their alleged video of KFC slaughterhouses on the website was regurgitated from at least 1997. It was the exact same footage used against Burger King in their ‘murder king’ campaign and the exact same footage used against Wendy’s before that. The only difference was by the third round, they had cropped off the 1997 time/date stamp. For some reason, this current exclusive KFC video wasn’t available - although they now claim they had it then.
I couldn’t think of a better spokesperson to fit their “augmented” style.
