Religious protests and those who want it both ways
From a Telegraph report about a potential lawsuit by a Christian group:
The Encinitas Union School District plans to offer yoga instruction at all of its nine schools from January, despite a protest by parents who say they believe it will indoctrinate their children in Eastern religion.
Really? Really? This parental protest against yoga is absolutely stupid.
But . . .
This “Christian” protest against yoga is the exact same kind of protest as the one perennially made by other parents who say that references to Christmas and Halloween should be removed from classrooms because it might indoctrinate their children in Christianity.
If you mock one you must mock the other. You can’t have it both ways.

Not sure who you’re addressing here, but I’m very happy to mock both.

Ah, Yoga.
Is it Hatha Yoga? If so, then it’s pretty much just stretching exercises. Stretching exercises are good, right?
If it’s any of the other forms of Yoga, or has any of the matram/chanting aspects of any Yoga forms, then it’s definitely Eastern Religion.
In that case? Ban the crap out of it.

Paul: seems you are actually educated about the various forms of Yoga: Bhakti, Dhyana. I try to educate my Christian brothers and sisters precisely on that point – Hatha yoga is part of getting ready for the other types of Yoga that are definitely religious. But what also often happens with Hatha yoga in the West is to give students – indoctrinate them into – an Oprahfied New Age spiritual bent clothed in pop psychology – Hinduism Lite. They then teach a camouflaged Monism – we are all one; all answers are found in yourself.

I’m a mother with young children in this school district and there is nothing religious about it. No chanting and they gave the poses new names.

I’m going to start putting together a Jesuscise workout and see if I can teach that in the public schools.

Krumm, you’re so dumb. Halloween and Christmas have secular versions. This yoga needs to be monitored so that it isn’t stealth Eastern religion they’re teaching. If it’s just stretching exercises, fine. This is just another example of liberal tolerance devouring itself. Only a nation living under Judeo-Christian religion can maintain the liberty that Americans used to cherish. You think Eastern religions will respect that? Dream on.

Downright funny stuff in this context.

Hatha yoga was started as a sex cult, so for those who say it isn’t religious… oops?
