Tomorrow is the day

Tomorrow is the Thursday before the presidential election.  It is traditionally the best day to launch an “October surprise.”

You’ll certainly remember the Bush DUI arrest, which even though it was November, hit the news on the Thursday before the election.  I remember the polls generally showed Bush leading by 3 to 5 points.  He ended up essentially tied and by the narrowest of margins squeaked out a win over Gore.  Imagine how much more pleasant these last eight years would have been if Bush’s first victory were by a comfortable margin instead.

A swing of 3 to 5 points in this year’s race either gives a close win to McCain or puts Obama well ahead.  Which campaign will launch tomorrow’s surprise?

(And if you’ve got some surprising October news yourself, send me your tips in the comments below.)
