Pampering the environment

Byline: | Category: Environment | Posted at: Monday, 20 October 2008

A British study found that disposable diapers are better for the environment than are old-fashioned cloth diapers.  They’re a hell of a lot more convenient too.

But since the findings contradict global warming conventional wisdom, the government has sought to suppress the report and eliminate funding for further research of the subject.

The findings themselves are much less troubling than is the government’s censorious reaction to them.

There were some problems with that study. They made some assumptions about people’s use and cleaning of re-usable “nappies” that may not be true.

But anyway, for me, this illustrates that global warming has trumped all the other environmental concerns. The UK is a small, crowded country with very little remaining space for landfill. That’s a real problem. And obviously reusable beats disposable on that score. Additionally, central government fees on local government landfilling is actually pretty darn onerous (though perhaps a warranted, if blunt, policy tool).

As it happens, we use disposable.

oops, I was referring to an earlier (recent) study – but anyway my point about other environmental impact being ignored remains valid.
