Don’t believe anything

Barack Obama is up by 14 points and increasing.  Or maybe he’s up to a 10 point lead.  Or down to only 4 points.  Or maybe he has only a 1 point lead–a statistical dead heat.  No matter who you support in this presidential election there’s a poll for you to believe in.  (And at least a couple other polls to ignore.)

But maybe what you should ignore–what we all should ignore–are the polls.  After all, don’t we always hear the complaint that the media should concentrate less on the horse race and pay more attention to the issues–a complaint, I should hasten to add, made most often by the media themselves.  I should further add, that they themselves don’t seem to know what they’re doing.

So for all the millions raised, for all the polls conducted, for all the media expose of every campaign misstep or perceived misstep, we are exactly where we were when we began this race:  Tied.  Or maybe not.  Take your pick.  And you’ve got two more weeks to change your pick.  My guess is that we’ll see a least a few more changes before then.
